Model trains have been around for many years and it is common knowledge that there were gauges similar to that of the N scale train from 1927 and onward. Most are fitted with a brake of one type or another, if the Model train is steam driven there will be smoke from the stack. Lights will be fitted as will digital control functions and realistic sound. Clearly because of the visual quality that brass provided the manufacturers have ensured the rest of the locomotive is equal to the task of being the best.

To sum up, brass models for a railroad layout are as good as the very best plus aesthetics that cannot be matched. Does that make them the very best? Possibly but only in the view of many if they can be afforded, they are expensive.

A Simplified Explanation of Model Train Scale

If you are new to the fascinating world of replica trains the terms model train scale and gauge may be confusing, at times they almost seem interchangeable. What follows though, is a simplified explanation of replica trains and their scales and gauges (referring to track size) to help unravel this confusing terminology.

Model trains can lead a child to explore the outermost realms of fantasy or experience the lumbering behemoths of the past, or they can provide a creative outlet for the adult. Part of the allure of these beautiful replicas is that these monster machines are miniaturized to sizes that can fit into a playroom, hobby room or garden area. To that end, certain standards called scales are used to recreate the locomotives as realistically as possible but with a much smaller size. Gauges for replicas refer to the track and the distances separating the load bearing rails. On models, these of course are much smaller and correlate to the scale of the real train. It is impossible to detail every single model train scale because in the beginning each manufacturer and modeler followed their own ideas, only in the last 100 or so years have model scales been more standardized in part due to the efforts of a dedicated few enthusiasts and a major toy train manufacturer. However, what followsare some of the most popular model train scale sizes in use.

HO Scale

This scale is the most popular scale right now in the English-speaking world including the UK. The exact details of the HO scale are that .14 equates to 1 foot of the real train. This shrinks the replica to a size that will allow for detailing of the train itself and yet fit within a room easily. This appeals to both the detail oriented artisan and modeler, as well as the hobbyist who is limited in space. However there is still a lot of disparity in sizing between manufacturers in Europe and the scales may not be precisely .14 to 1 ft even when labeled HO.

N Scale

The N Scale model trains are one of the more popular very small-scale model sizes. The N scale miniaturizes the trains at a scale of 1:148, which means that 148 inches of the train are scaled down to 1” on the model. These tiny replicas are great for modelers who want to create complex railway layouts and scenes but do not have the space to dedicate. On the other hand, the tradeoff is that these tiny trains will display less detail than larger models due to their reduced sizes and they are more costly than the HO models though less expensive than the G scale (often used for outdoor gardens).

G Scale

In popular terminology the G scale model is also known as the garden scale model (though it is not the official term) and these are usually made for outdoor displays. They allow for fine details in the scenery and the model trains but are generally too large for indoor displays. The most popular maker of this scale of replica trains is LGB known as the Lehmann Gross Bahn. The exact scale varies from European to North American manufacturers. Generally, in Europe the G scale is 1:22.5 while in North America it is 1:20.3. Though the difference might seem small, they can become magnified when working with a garden sized layout and consistency should apply throughout the layout.

The 0 Scale

The 0 Scale is most frequently considered a toy train scale and was popularized by the toymaker Lionel. Some modelers however use a 0-scale train size and run it on a replica track.

You've probably figured this out by now, but there are many, many different model railroad trains out there, and there is a train for every occasion, preference, and individual. The type of train you choose will depend highly on what you like and what you plan to do with your train set. Many people choose to build some rather elaborate scenery, and for this reason a smaller train might be in order.

The most interesting thing about model train scenery is that you can make it as realistic as you want. Many people found that as children they had a desire to control and drive a model train which actually translated into their adult lives. There is nothing wrong with this, and it is in fact a very healthy hobby. There are some people who have dedicated entire rooms in their home to hosting a model train and it's scenery.

You can have winding rivers, realistic trees, cityscapes, and any number of other pieces of scenery. The size of the train will determine exactly how detailed your scenery can become however, and this is something that you will need to take into account when you are selecting your scale.

There are two numbers to remember when you are buying yourself a model train. First of all the sale is the size of the train, and the gauge is the distance between rails. If you are looking for a decent sized train with a touch of realism, you might try the 0 scale as the manufacturers of these trains have dedicated themselves to a high level of detail. If you have limited room however it might just be a good idea to stick with HO model trains.

The HO model train replaced the 00 train and eventually became common in smaller countries. The N scale however is a bit smaller and is quickly becoming the standard. In essence, the smaller your train is, the more scenery you can afford to create. With the N or Z scale trains you could actually create multi-level scenery quite easily if you want, and if that is your desire, then you might just find that you can create an extremely realistic train route using Digital Command Control.

One thing to remember though is that it can be hard to implement digital command control on some of the smaller trains. This is quite true with the Z scale train considering you can easily fit several Z scale cars in the palm of your hand. You might be able to create your own DCC board for it if you are adept with electronics, but it would be very difficult otherwise.

Make sure you investigate all of your options. There are a great number of model railroad trains out there that you can use with your scenery, and there are some that might take up entire rooms. The choice is yours, and given enough time you will most certainly find the right model railroad trains!

The HO Model Train Paves the Way

There are many types of model trains, but the HO model train is one that that has a rather interesting history. First of all, the train is called HO because of it's 1:87 scale. 1:87 is actually half the size of the 0 scale train, and they were created to help ease the financial stress of the great depression. In other words, they were an alternative to the 00 gauge, but as with many products the 00 was firmly rooted in the UK market, making it the most preferred model.

That being the case, it would be nearly impossible for the HO to make any headway, but in the 1950's something happened. In the United States of America people began to see the use of model railroads and what was once considered a mere toy was now the subject of great interest. People wanted more detail in their railroad scenery, and that would require the use of the HO scale train.

When it comes to scenery, size is everything. You need to have room to place that scenery, and you need to make sure it is scaled properly. This is not always entirely easy to do, but make no mistake: with the right train, anything is possible. It wasn't long before the HO scale trains took over the 0 scale trains completely, or at least in America.

While the 00 scale is still quite popular in Britain, the majority of North America has indeed adopted the HO model train, making it one of the things America can claim as their own. DCC control is preferable among many train enthusiasts due to the extreme amounts of control that they can exercise on their model trains.

HO Model Railroads: Tips for Making the Most of Your Railway

HO model railroads are built to exacting standards and these layouts were developed to fit into smaller spaces allowing a more complex railway layout than the larger 0 or G scale. The HO scale is 1:87 scale, and with complex railway layouts these models can consume a large amount of space, too large for tiny apartments. However, for the general hobbyist in a house or large apartment these are the perfect size in terms of expense and space.

Building HO Model Railroads: Varying Levels of Complexity

Though the scale on HO model railroads is 1/87 of the size of the original this can still take up a lot of space if a very complex layout is planned. The first step is always the planning of the railway and that may well be constrained by space. Since scenery will have to be on scale, available space must be measured first, and then the layout is planned to fit within it.

Historically Accurate Layouts

This is perhaps an advanced step in building model trains and their railways. The hobbyist endeavors to replicate the exact portion of the route or a stop a particular locomotive made, as closely as possible. There are no shortcuts to this particular task. It requires a lot of research, photos of a particular area, and as much information as can be found. Fortunately, for the hobbyist many locomotive stops and paths are well documented and photographed or even painted. The results of the research can be seen in a beautifully accurate replica complete with scenery. This is not recommended for the brand new hobbyist, as it is research and time intensive.

Model Railroads and Scenery

Whether it is handcrafted scenery, or buying premade scale parts, the scenery can add realism to a lovingly crafted model trains and railroad layouts. Even with layouts that are not attempting historically accurate reproductions, the delicate trestle bridge, or the tiny twinkling streetlights certainly add visual focal points and pique to HO model railroads layouts. For the first attempt, it is usually best to stick with the basics. The first layout may well be a work of trial and error, learning what parts work together, which materials will give the most realistic effect and hence, simpler is better. The hobbyist can usually elaborate on the basic scenery as they become more comfortable with creating effects on a 1:87 scale.

Most of the HO scale models will be electric powered with batteries being reserved for toy trains or for outdoor G scale trains. A power source in the room the railway will be set up is crucial, and ensuring that cords and outlets are cleared for traffic should be done in the planning stages of the railway layout. After all, model trains are meant to be admired, so make sure to keep a cord free pathway for the audience.

With all the materials ready, you will need 63 pieces of track to create a 24 Atlas-N R-11 30 degree curved tracks, 17 Atlas-N R-9.75 30 degree curve track, 4 Atlas-N 0.63 inches straight track, 8 Atlas-R 5 inch track, and Atlas-N 2.5 inch straight track.

For the hand turnouts, you will need 6 Atlas-N #2701 standard #4 right hand turnouts, and 3 Atlas-N #2700 #4 left hand turnouts. There should be four ovals inside of each other, with the third center oval.

There are two sets of switch backs on the central ones, with only one way switch back from the outside.

Utilizing G Scale Model Trains

G scale model trains are an amazing piece of engineering. Not only are they the largest of the model trains, they are also the easiest to work with. In case you are not up to date with model train terminology we will talk a bit about the different scales. The first thing you need to know is that model trains are standardized to a point that everyone can use the same equipment.

There was a time when this simply was not so. In the beginning of the model train hobby trains were made of different sizes, shapes, and orientations. If you bought track for one train there was a chance that it would simply fail to work with a different brand. It wasn't long before someone determined there was indeed a need to standardize both the trains and the tracks, making it necessary to assign scales to the trains.

There are many scales, but the G scale stands for Garden Variety. In other words it is very common and it is very large. This type of train is so large in fact that you will rarely see a full scale scenery for it and it is commonly used in outdoor gardens. Something to note about the G scale model trains is that they are nearly impossible to break. This includes exposure to the elements and even children.

If the G scale model train does happen to break you will find that the parts within are extremely large and easy to work with. You can replace the parts or you can repair them if the situation happens to permit. In addition to that, the large size of the train makes it much easier to add DCC control if you so desire.

While there is not much you can do in the way of scenery, you can certainly get creative with your G scale model trains. For instance it would be a good idea to run a track through your house either at floor level or at ceiling level. Many people have actually tried running track through their walls and into the backyard. With elevated tracks and plexiglass barriers to keep the train from falling, these make a great addition to a property for virtually train lover.

As we've stated though, the G scale is very large and should only be used by those who happen to have quite a bit of room. In addition to that the G scale will rarely be seen with a benchwork of it's own. Rather an entire room will become the benchwork for the train, and if that is something you can live with, you might just have a winner.

Many people wonder why model railway trains are so popular. They often think of these as toys and nothing more, but model railway trains are much, much more than simple toys. They are in fact amazing pieces of machinery that can not only simulate a real world train, but can also provide a level of joy and amusement that one could previously only find in their childhood days.

When you were young there is a chance that you thought about becoming a train engineer, but as you grew older you discovered that it either did not pay as much as you thought, or perhaps you found something else you were interested in. Either way, reality sinks in pretty hard at times, but not all is lost! We can once again experience the thrill of a train by taking advantage of model railway trains.

One of the most interesting things about model trains is that they can be virtually any theme, virtually any type of scenery, and you can choose your control scheme freely. If you wish, your train could run on batteries, electricity, or even steam if you so desire. Keep in mind that steam is a bit more expensive, but you will pay the price for any type of power source you choose.

There are several different train sizes that you might choose, and they range from the N scale to the G scale. The G scale is not widely used, but for those who have the room it is a wonderful addition to an attic or garden. The N scale is small enough to be used virtually anywhere even though it does not work well with DCC. It will work, but you need an expert to perform the board installation if you want to get anywhere.

The tracks for model trains come in a huge variety, from curved pieces, to straight pieces, and you can even find flexible track that will permit you to create a course in any way you can imagine. Flexible tracks will prove to be quite useful for those who have complex terrain as they will not need to compromise their design in order to accommodate the track. As you probably know by now, no one wants to move a body of water two inches to the left just because they did not account for the size and position of the track.

On that note, benchwork is yet another very important part of your model trains. The right benchwork can spell success, and the wrong benchwork can spell annoyance. It is most important that you build or choose benchwork that can be easily disassembled, especially if you plan to take your model railway trains to shows or even move them in the future. If your benchwork is too permanent you will not be able to take it anywhere, and this can get to be a problem. So with that in mind choose the right benchwork as well as any other accessories for your railway model train.

Model Train Information for the Newbie

Model train information is absolutely vital for the new enthusiast and the model train veteran alike. Something that should be noted before we begin providing model train information is that model trains are not toy trains. Toy trains are the sets you would find beneath your tree on Christmas morning. Such trains have a few characteristics that set them apart from the major competition and these characteristics are the following:

-Made of cheap plastic

-Lightweight and often requires a push-start

-The track is made of a stiff, light material that often cannot hold together

-Complex terrains are impossible

When you compare these to conventional model trains you will find that they pale in comparison. At best, a toy model train is simply a primer for one's journey into the world of model trains, and you will find that once you make that transition a world of possibilities opens up for you. What type of possibilities you ask? The first thing you will notice is the level of scenery that you can create.

When it comes to model trains, you can create an infinite amount of scenery which can look as realistic as you want. There are a number of different materials you could use for your scenery, starting of course with paper mache. Sculpt your land in any way you see fit and add roads, railroad tracks, street lights, buildings, lakes, rivers, or whatever you believe will work with your setting.

Among other pieces of model train information that you might find, you will probably be quite happy to discover that you can use Digital Command Control to precisely orchestrate the movements of your model train. The extent of your DCC control will of course be determined by you as you progress with the development of your model train, and it could even go so far as to involve a full scale server.

If you do choose to go the DCC route try to remember that some model trains are better for hosting the control board than others. Take a train as small as the N scale for example. It might be more convenient for those with limited space, but it will have difficulty receiving the board. This does not mean it is impossible, but it does mean you will need a bit of experience or you will at least need to speak to an attendant at a hobby shop for tips.

The more model train information you acquire for your hobby, the more successful you are going to be. There are many hints and tips that one should be aware of before they attempt to do some of the more advanced model train activities. When you are starting out, make sure you do not make the mistake of assuming you know everything! Too many people make this error, and too many people fail at their modeling dreams. That being said, it's time to prepare, and to obtain some decent and useable model train information.

The Merits of Toy Model Trains

Toy model trains are not standard model trains. This is a common mistake among newcomers to the hobby, but we will try to clear it up right now. The first thing we will state is that model trains can be a bit expensive. The N scale train can cost anywhere from $20 to $200 depending on the model you get, and larger trains are even more expensive. Let's not even talk about the track which can cost up to $100!

The problem is obviously money, and many people would like to know whether or not they would actually enjoy the model train hobby before they delve into it. This is a fair question that may not have had an answer at one point, but it certainly does now. Toy model trains are always an option these days even though some of them are only sold seasonally.

The most common among the toy model trains is the one that you see under the Christmas tree during the holiday season. These are often sold as gifts and will come in many different shapes, sizes, and themes. For all intents and purposes they are model train sets, the biggest difference being the lack of realism and the failure to adopt any particular scale.

The general theme of these trains is fantasy. They are quite often modeled after trains that do not exist in the real world, and an actual hobbyist might be a bit appalled at this notion. There are a number of other things to note about these trains, and they are quite naturally things that the model train enthusiast would not particularly favor.

First of all the toy model trains are made of a cheaper plastic meaning they are more prone to breakage. In addition to that, their light weight makes them difficult to 'get going'. Often times these trains will require a push start before they will actually go anywhere. Sometimes these trains will derail, and this is especially true if you add too many cars to the train. In spite of that these trains do still have their uses, even in the modeling community.

The most notable use of these toy model trains is as a test run for those who believe they might be interested in the hobby. There are many who try to commit, but in the end find they are simply not 'cut out' for it. Due to the money you would spend on this hobby, it is wise to test it out with a toy model train. The most one of these will put you back is about $30, making it the best choice for experimentation.

Though toy model trains might not be the best choice for the avid modeler, they are certainly nice for those who need something to play with. They are also great for displays and even toys for children who love trains. So if you feel you're ready to take the leap into the modeling hobby, by all means, start with the toys.
